- The following is a response to a request found on the NET regarding
listener comments about specific radio stations. I been in the Austin area
for ten years and I have listened to all of the radio station Austin has to
offer current and in the past. You see I am a lover of music, all types.
- I am convinced KAZI 88.7 FM has the best overall format. The DJ's are
accessible and are all very polite, they are to be commended for job well
done. Other stations should take notice, if they haven't already!

- KMFA has resisted much of the "dumbing down" that has affected
most of the classical radio stations in the US. Their programming is not as
adventurous as it could be (I'd like more 20th century music; it's 1995
after all) but it's still much better than the wall-to-wall Telemann,
Mozart, Vivaldi, etc. that you get on stations is many more major markets.

- I wish they had more public service programming. They are a public radio
station after all.

- KUT plays lots of NPR programming, including All Things Considered,
Morning Edition, and Fresh Aire. They air interesting talk programs on
weeknights at 7PM, including Car Talk on Monday nights and Selected Shorts,
a story telling program, on Tuesday.

- A democratically-run cooperative radio station. Lots of public affairs
programming, including the excellent Austin Airwaves, Fridays at 6PM.

- KHHT, the 70's station, is no more. It has been replaced by KAJZ, a light
jazz station.

- KAJZ is a step in the right direction, but seems stuck in the cotton candy
- Muzak for baby boomers mold. Celine Dion makes nice music, but it's not
jazz...not even "SMOOTH jazz". Please, don't confuse "Easy
Listening" with "jazz"!

- It may not be perfect "Smooth Jazz," but I only wish that the
Dallas/Ft Worth area had as good a station as your KAJZ. It seems that once
a jazz/new age station gets good, they turn to a format of playing too much
vocals and into a "love jazz" station. Let's hope KAZJ keeps up
the great work.

- KLBJ is awful. They are so behind the times. This is a station that tries
to tout themselves as in touch with the Austin music scene but they never
play any local music in rotation. I remember they would treat Stevie Ray
Vaughn like he was God while treating the Butthole Surfers with indignance.
Now all of the sudden it's the other way around. Even the morning show is
awful.

Paul Terry Walhus (3/10/04) - I love the Sam and Bob Show in the morning and
cover it extensively on http://austinmayor.com/sambob
... It's a no holds barred operation, it's funny, and Sam and Bob always cut
right to the chase. These guys don't hold back. There is no call
screening so there are a lot of crank calls but these guys just keep moving
along. Bob Cole is the owner of Hills Cafe and the Tavern and a legend in
country music radio and Sammy is the leader of the Geezinslaws band.
Friends of Willie Nelson and just about everyone else noteworthy in central
Texas. If you call in be on your toes!

- I live in San Antonio, but listen 101X (KROX) there in Austin. Despite the
fact that San Antonio radio sucks, KROX is by-far the best radio station I
have heard since moving to Texas.

- I would have to say that 101x is the best Austin has to offer, but 107.5
the buzz in Houston is a hell of alot better.

- 101X - KROX is totally weak and needs serious help. Now that KNACK is
gone, there is no good "new rock" station in Austin. This station
plays some decent bands, but everything is extremely lame and monotone. They
are too TIMID to play anything too new or loud, but WE WANT NEW AND LOUD!!!
They do not play anything you can't hear on KMIX, KHFI, or KLBJ. The only
things that make them different are their obnoxious dj's whose only talent
is to get twelve year olds to call in to answer stupid questions. They
should play more music that sounds alive and stop relying on what everyone
else is playing. Here is a hint: when the top 40 stations start playing a
song to death, it is time for the "new rock alternative" to move
on to something different.

- Recently KPEZ changed their morning show to a syndicated program out of
North Carolina. The central theme of the show seems to be auto racing and
there is very little music. The humor on the show is forced, the laugh track
worse than most sitcoms and there is no talk of Austin issues. I hope
someone will contact me if the format changes to something better.

- Thanks for nothing in giving away the free passes to the movie Phenomenon
(06/27/96). Like dozens of others, I was turned away at the door because the
movie was sold out, even though I held a pass to get in. I wasted my lunch
hour picking up the pass in the rain, and my evening driving to the theater
and waiting in line.

- KPEZ (aka Z-102) has this really special redneck beer drinking belching
mobile-home NASCAR kind-of morning show that is so far out of synch with
Austin that it must be some psycopathic station manager's idea of black
humor. It's too bad, because I actually used to like some of the music they
played.

- Z102 may have a redneck morning show but that midday chick, Laura Francis,
is an incredible DJ with a great sense of humor matched only by her
incredible bod. And, hell, where else can you hear such awesome tunes.

- I just wish KPEZ would extend their play list. I love Classic rock, but
there are alot more good, popular songs out there to play. I just keep
hearing the same songs over and over.

- I disagree with all of the comments listed on John Boy & Billy. In
fact, that is why I tune in to the show. They have a better variety of music
than the rest of the time. Not that the songa are bad, they are just played
too often without much change. My complaint is about the traffic report. I
drive for an hour each way on weekday mornings, and I depend on getting a
traffic report. I did not hear one this morning or yesterday at all,
although I heard the weather report during every break, which does not
change as often as the traffic! I have recently begun listening to a
different station in the evening to get a traffic report, but will always
listen in the morning so that I can get the Big Show.

- KGSR is a paradox to me. The music they play is great. Since moving to San
Marcos a year ago I've listened to nothing else. But Ed & Cecilia, the
morning DJs are the worst.

such as the "Dread Beat Club" Thursdays at 11pm. Where else can
you hear a good hour of Reggae?

call-in contests, about as alternative as K-Mart.

- Personally I think that all of the stations in the Austin area are a bunch
a fake phonies that only try and copy KNNC which is the only true radio
station around. That's so easy to realize if you have a brain.

- Max Miller has a lot of coverage about sports on the Internet in the
mornings. And he has a web page discussion which is linked to his home page
at http://www.kfon.com. The morning show runs from 7 am to 9 am Monday
through Friday. Free cellular call in is 1490. And the frequency is 1490 on
your AM dial. Recommended.

General Remarks About Austin Radio

- Four radio stations are working the "alternative" mill : KLBJ-FM
(93.7), KUTZ (98.9), 101X, and KNNC (107.7). Each station has some
variation, but it's like whether you have ranch or french dressing on your
salad; it's still mostly green leafy vegetables.
- Example : while it's only a 15-20 minute commute from my house-work, I
have no fear of contracting SPDS. (Smashing Pumpkins Deficiency Syndrome). I
just keep pushing buttons till I find the vampire song. You could say the
same for Alanis Morissette.

- The difference between Austin Radio and Miami Radio - Miami Radio really
sucks... case in point, salsa stations are bound by law to play "Devorame
Otra Vez" swinging salsa tune at least daily.
- Second dif - Austin Radio fails at being the soundtrack to any TV series.
Miami Radio is either The Nanny or Miami Vice. Arghhh...
- Nuf said.
