ok, this is gonna sound so dumb but....never having done this as a child, i was intrigued by a scene in a movie where gum wrapper chains were made. i've found some craft sites which talk about it but i can't get it to work--the links are too small to put another link in (i can't do more than two links). aaaggghhhh! i'd like to share this with my kids so if you know what i'm talking about and are really good at instructions, please help me!

figured it out, had to make each link thinner. when i get some time (i know i've promised elsewhere to get some time), i will show you how to do it step-by-step.

ok, now here are the long-awaited step by step instructions with pics (may take a bit to load):

here's what the chain looks like:

oh, that's tiny, huh?

if you can make it out, the chain looks like chevron's side-by-side.

ok, now step 1 of the link:

take a gum wrapper (outside wrapper, not the foil) and unfold it completely:

Step 2:

fold it in half lengthwise:

Step 3, unfold it and refold lengthwise so that the wrapper ends meet at the fold line created in Step 2:

i was hoping you could see the line in the middle above. to reiterate on step 3, unfold the first half you made in step 2 with the inside facing up. now take the sides and fold in until they meet in the middle (on the fold line made in step 2).

Step 4:

Fold in half lengthwise (do not unfold beforehand)-it'll be about 1/4 inch wide.

Step 5:

Fold in half lengthwise again-it'll be about 1/8 inch wide.

Step 6:

now fold in half again (not lengthwise, but the ends)

Step 7:

Unfold Step 6 and take the ends and fold in toward the center-so they meet in the middle at the fold line from Step 6.

Step 8:

You will need to fold the piece as indicated above and crease the folds to make it easier to work with.

ok, now let's add it to the chain. we'll be placing this link on the left side of the chain. first, let me show you what that looks like:

if you can, you'll see the ends of the fold made in Step 8. you'll manipulate the ends of the new link, into the ends of the chain.

Step 9:

notice the direction of the new link, you will alternate each link this way. the folds in the paper, and linking it alternately like this will lock each link together. this next pic will show a side view of the chain with the new link:

the above really gives you a good look at how the link is manipulated into the chain. it takes practice and creasing each fold helps out a lot.

so, start saving those gum wrappers and bring back a long ago pastime for your friends and family.

I tried to do it......*sigh* I need a brush up course. Think you need to create buttons too. I wonder... hmmmm... I'll email you about this!

*Hugs* I'll brush you while you ponder what you might like for buttons. I will go searching tomorrow for something that might match if you don't have any at hand. We don't want them clashing. *grin*
