Yes! Classical music topic. And how about a jazz one?
Hey, I have a funny which I always remember this time of year. My dear buddy (now dead) Joseph T. Weingold (Jerry Weingold, virtually the father of the movement for services for the mentally retarded) was visiting me. I had asked my then husband to pick me up a recording of The Messiah, the Serchen one. Husband came home with Sir Thomas Beecham and the London Phil. Right band, wrong leader, huh? So I complained, "Oh no! We've got the wrong messiah!"
So Jerry Weingold said, with his most Jewish rising inflection, "This is new? We've been telling you this for centuries."

Wondering what your musical experiences have been over the holidays. Did you participate in concerts, catch some great groups, see something outstanding on the tube? Are you getting into any of the bands on the 'net, catching their cuts? If so, what do you think of the sound quality? Are any of you into MIDI? If so, what hardware/software do you use. Are you producing scores?
As the old spiritual goes, I wonder as I wander as I wonder as I wander...

Hi all,
I love music. I play guitar. I am an eclectrical engineer and design some
original effects. I've mostly been into heavy alternative of late: Jane's Addiction, Sound Garden, Tool, AIC, etc... But I am really starting to like techno-jungle/bass and drums. I want to do Internet collaberation. I have lot's of cool guitar stuff that I would like to get mixed with someone doing MIDI/Sampling/Looping stuff. I do like Morphine (what little I've heard) and Soul Coughing (saw them at SXSW here in Austin, TX; they were really good). Anyway, that's a start.

Really like music--mostly alternative/whiney folk stuff for now, but really almost anything (except heavy-duty country; sorry monty et al). I love that feeling when you hear a song for the first time and for whatever reason it just blows you away...and I empathize with Mc Bruce and the blank stares from record store clerks--and what's worse, I've usually just heard a bit of a song with no identifying artist or title given...try buying something based on a song fragment and nothing more! KUT used to be s
cool for new and unusual music--I taped hours of Broadway showtunes back in the late 80s. Public Radio claims to have a 1-800 number where you can get just about anything, tho I've never tried it (again, when you only have a song fragment...!); I've had a LOT of success at Borders Books and Music, looking things up on their computerized system.

I like just about every type of music, but listen mostly to blues (all years - from Etta, Robert Nighthawk, Brownie McGhee to Buckwheat Zydeco and Koko and rock (mainly from the years 1969 to 1974). I do have a passion for good old gaelic (irish) folk music (hard to find on cd) and jug bands (harder still).
But pride myself on owning one of the most extensive blues collections that I have ever seen. I host a memorial day weekend party at my home every year and have a variety of musicians and bands on the Saturday of the weekend. Most only play for 30 to 45 minutes but the jams when everyone is done is great. Over the last years we headlined the "Bastrop Left Bank All Star Jug Band Review", "High Tide", "Chief", "Ray Lafuente" and "Steve & Janice" this year will feature "Burn Unit" a blues and rock band, "Ma
Butler" and his singing saw (yes he plays saw), and "Janie & Ray" and acoustic folk duo. I only have a few invitations left but you could email me at teejaycee@hotmail.com and if you are going to be in the Austin area for that weekend and you play an instrument, maybe we can work something out.

Since I received an email asking me to post to a conference on this site as 'a test', I thought I'd stop in and do just that. I like the pun on 'The Well', terry...
I picked the music conference since I run a small independent jazz label down here in Auckland, New Zealand... but it seems that country and rock seem to be the order of the day... so I won't bore anyone with that.
Anyway... consider this a test. Connection seems fine, even though I'm operating from the great South Pacific bandwidth bottleneck... Congratulations on a great site.

Fusion is one of those grey areas, but the late Tony Williams' LIFETIME qualifies as one of the great fusion bands of the 70's. Essentially, jazz guys were branching out into rock and rock guys were experiencing jazz. "Fusion" is the combination of both these elements into one cohesive style.

maybe it was just excessive gremlins the other night,

place has shut down within seven days...

I just ordered a recordable CD-R (about $500) to do backup snapshots of
the systems we run and we're working on procedures for rapid recovery.
We also need to work out better access to our server site from DDC, so we
can get in and bring things back up. I am building a Pentium with dual 4
gb drives and 128 mb of ram memory which will have a backup CD that we
can run off of if either of these mirrored hard drives goes down. Triple
redundancy. I don't think we'll have this ready in 7 days, but at least
we're working on better recovery procedures. This machine has been going
along for about 4 years now without a break, so generally I'd say the
track record has been pretty good. If you sense a problem, please email
me *and* our system admin Jeff Kramer at jeff@spring.net,jeffk@well.com
so we can take preventative measures. If the system goes down email

Although I've lived in the South most of my life, I never really liked country music until I moved to Austin. Mainly because country music radio generally sucks, and most of what Nashville puts out sucks, excepts for the Mavericks, Dwight Yoakum, and a few others. But in Austin radio stations play OLD country music (Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Haggard), and that stuff's got a lot of soul. Also, bands here in Austin take chances and experiment with the country sound. Some of my musician buddies now play c
untry music but they used to be punk rockers.
I also like blues and R&B (check out Erykah Badu's album). Grew up on Southern rock, and I still have my old Allmann Bros. and Lynrd Skynrd records from high school, although I no longer have a turntable. I tend to go the the "rootsy" rock sound. Love Los Lobos!

Autumn, you would hint around about my age when my B-day's Friday ;). If you were a teenager in the South, the pickings were pretty slim musically. Let's just say I'm old enough to have gone to high school parties when "Frampton Comes Alive" dominated the party's stereo ( sometimes on 8-track!).

I get such a kick out of hearing people, who are so much younger than I am, talking about how old they feel. When I was in high school, we recorded the music for the party on a reel to reel recorder, prior to the party, because records would skip when we danced to the music.

Huh, I don't want to sound off, but some Info here is, hmh, *difficult* at leat as Victrolas and wax cylinders are concerned.
Vitrolas are generally models of Gramophones, made by the Victor Company, using 78s (also known as shellac discs, named for the black, brittle material). Gramophones were in use from approx. 1880 onwards. 78s were produced till well into the sixties; I own e.g. Caruso, Hank Williams and Elvis P.-78s. Wax cylinders were technically the older product, invented by Edison, but not really as good a mass product as gramophone records. For this Edison-technology, check out: http://www.tinfoil.com/ , where you ca
listen to wax cylinders. If you really own some, Glenn Sage offers recording + putting them on CD for you before returnng them.
I know electric wax cylinder players (phonographs) from the 20ies are sold for around $300. Recordings vary in price.
Want more?

Besides being a smart-ass, I collect 78s of all ages. I'm editor of a music magazine in Germany, subtly named SUPERSTAR. We cover alternative and other styles, mostly acts who are recording but not major sellers. Real musicians, who work their arses off every night for some grub, a stage and gas-money. Right now I listen to Bobby Conn (Rise UP!) from Chicago, german organ-playing acts, San Francisco songwriter Susan James (touring Germany soon) and tango from Finland, which is like arctic blues 'n' vodka.

Sorry, Kitchen - you'll be the first to know. Wanna see paper-issue? I could mail a copy over, if you are all that curious. We have some english-language-pieces, but most is german. New copy goes to the printer tomorrow. Been a busy boy!
Finnish tango: the CD is available from german label Trikont in Munich. If you're interested, I could find out about distribution to the US. Definitely a HOT but COOL tip - very melancholic, very moving. Not like this sexy-hot cliche associated with tango, but very mellow and bluesy. Wait, gotta put it on the stereo right away... ;=}

That does not count for Stacey, however!
Stacey, when you are coming over after March 18th, superstar should be available at every trainstation's newsagent. In Berlin, you should get it at every bigger nwesagent who's got some variety in the music mag department.
If you like to, write me where you go to in Germany and how long you stay, and I'll see if I can find you some nice concerts. E.g. The guy who wrote the "tango in Finland" article gets a tango band from Finland to tour March to April. One stop will be Frankfurt, but I forgot when exactly. Interested?

Huh, what did I have for breakfast? This hickup it gave me sure is bad!
Anyways, Jim, that's omitting two more subtle problems that come with time going by, being preoccupied with other stuff (e.g. raising kids, trying to keep rest of brains left, etc.).
First thing, you get worn out and tired. Feel happy just to be left alone in your home, before crawling to bed, just to relive the same another day.
Next is, this gets you out of touch with the "scene", what's good to see, what you'd hate and what you'd love.
Trust me, it's more than just outsourcing childcare for an evening. It's also a question of energy and interest. Can't help with the energy thing, but I'll sure work on the interest thing, just give me some time. Too bad I don't know your scene too well, and even worse, you folks can't drop over to come to a concert with me over here. Still, let me try.

There's not a lot serious audio geeks want to talk about more than their high end amps 'n' stuff.

But, you need to bring some friends with you to discuss these things. History was created then left to die by the hosts. Somehow, we gotta get more posters.
Geo is thriving now because I went to my friends off of Spring and brought them into the fold to talk about things in there (but this beating a dead horse since you avoid Geo like it could give you an incurable social disease...)

Certain subjects are just more universal than others though. More people are interested in music than in geology (or law!). One can't make people develop a mad interest in something just for the sake of keeping a conference running. In that sense I think we shouldn't judge conferences on the amount of traffic they generate. Surely if just one person other than the host is interested, that makes it a valid conference. Mind, here speaks the mother of not-worthy-of-hosts'-ar$es though. Guilty.

...but are you interesting in Jewelry? We've been posting lovely things and pearls and talking about stuff we have and stuff we would like to have and things we wouldn't be caught dead in. I am not an art fan particularly, but when I did go into your conference I found the same people posting interesting and fun things. The same goes for Geo. Do not judge it as dreary until you have looked around. Then you can pick up a handy stone laying around and cast it at me. Know anything about leylines in Britain or Megaliths anywhere? How about archaeology? we have topics for both of them as well as killer cool site for kids.

I don't judge any conferences - I think they're all great. And I like history and jewelry immensely but, yes, I am in a bit of a difficult position - as I'm sure some other are. In many ways I haven't done anything with my life yet, whereas you've done alot. Sometimes I wish I were 40 with all this strive and struggle already behind me. You don't have to worry about what you want to achieve anymore, or about what is WORTH achieving and what not. I am 26, in the process of switching careers, trying to get a degree that will enable me to do so, while bringing 2 kids up more or less on my own, and it all requires a hell of an effort financially and emotionally. Therefore I have different priorities to set, and that means I have to work the spring around all the things I want to achieve, not the other way around. And in the few minutes I have over weekends I just don't have the energy to go into things that require alot of effort - I just want to see how my friends are. I hope that's not insulting.

My apologies for doing that to you...you are too incredibly gifted and precious to do that to. Please forgive. I have a huge head start over you and I am stunned at the amount you have accomplished in your life. You have more gumption and ambition and the self-confidence to accomplish it I am in awe, and bow before your superiority.
Financial independence is a wonderfully liberating thing. It has taken me a while and the help of some really understanding men - including my father...

Hi
Marcia knows me well from the Geo conference and from the World Seismicity and World Volcanism clubs at Yahoo! but I appear here with other things on my mind.
Aside from the fact that John Denver's music dominates my life to an extent only rivalled by classical music, he is a songwriter, singer, entertainer for more reasons than one. I know here that not everyone is going to agree he one of the greatest people in his time, but I think so because he supported the Hunger Project for the starving children of Africa who were born into a world not of their creation. He was a tireless supporter of disarmament and advocate for environmental issues. His music was geared towards helping him achieve ambitious goals by providing the funds. He had this vision of a clean green world, free of hunger, nuclear devices where mankind lived in harmony with the environment.
I love his songs because they have unconfrontational messages and a purpose. They tell a story or a vision that he had and through those messages he did his bit to help the world become a better place.
Rocky Mountain High - his life story.
Annies Song - for his first wife Annie.
The eagle and the hawk - for his love of flying
Calypso - a tribute to great sea explorers like Jacques Cousteau
Amazon - a tribute to the vastness and diversity of the Amazon rainforest.

Rob!!! *BIG WARM HUGS* What a delight to be catching up on the rest of spring and to find you here! Be still, my heart. You and John Denver? May we listen to him as we watch the surf surge and crash on the basaltic cliffs? I know just the music for riding over the rift zone. You might think this is highly low-brow, but Hooked on the Classics is just about that bouncy and so is your roadway from the continuous changing elevations from quakes. The music is lively, exciting and just what compliments my high spirits when going down there.
You alreay know I am a hopeless romantic. Actually Les Preludes would be a dramatic backround sound for an high fountaining roar - if any music is needed at all. How about music to see New Zealand by?
