Topic 48 of 100: Favourite Song

Wed, Jun 10, 1998 (12:40) | Riette Walton (riette)
Wish I could say mine was a noble one with deep lyrics and beautiful
tune. But my ultimate current favourite is defenitely Chumbawamba's
Tubthumping.

Me gonna hijack this topic slightly, if that's OK. Lyrics to my favourite song coming up:

I have been unfaithful
I have been unworthy
I have been unrighteous
And I have been unmerciful.
I have been uncreachable
I have been unteachable
I have been unweary
And I have been undesirable.
And sometimes, I have been unwise,
I've been undone by what I'm unsure of
But because of You, and all that you went through,
I know that i have never been unloved.

I have been unbroken
I have been unmended
I have been uneasy
And I have been unapproachable.
I've been unemotional
I've been unexceptional
I've been undecided
And I've been unqualified.
Unaware - I have been unfair
I've been unfit for blessings from above
But even I can see
The sacrifice You made for me
To show that i have never been unloved.

It's because of you, and all that you went through
I know that I have never been unloved.

(Michael W. Smith - "Never been Unloved")

That's totally beautiful. Is the tune nice too? And it's a good idea for hijacking, because stupid me created the topic BEFORE seeing that it existed already.

yeah, the tune's really nice, too :) i sat down and learnt it yesterday, but i haven't got it perfect yet. it's in my least favourite key, which makes it a bugger to play :)

That IS a bugger on the guitar, and one of the reasons why I'll never be good, because you often use a B major chord while playing in E major, and my hands are just too small to be able to get it clear. Oh well.
Hey, Mike, we're on at the same time!

yup! b-major is a pain at the moment with my weak finger. and also on my guitar, which doesn't like those shaped chords particularly. not sure why. it's got a bit of an attitude problem :)

Ha, if it was the forefinger, then ANY chord will be painful, except for E minor!
You'll have to play rap from now on!!!

Mike, sorry I just left like that last night - I had to go smack some little buttocks for hitting one another on the head with Duplo elephants, and that upset me, so I didn't come back. But it was rude of me to just left like that. I'm sorry.

All time favorites include "What I like about you" and "Love Shack" for their dance-ability; "5 String Serenade" by Mazzy Star and anything by Tom Waits for poignancy; and a slew of other songs that make my heart beat faster and make me light up a cigarette when they come on the radio. (so many songs, so little time...)

I liked "Free Bird", but it was not one of my favorites. I listened to Lynrd Skynrd off and on. I was going to name "Ride My Sesaw", by the Moody Blues as my next favorite. This is more by association than by the music. I have a lot of happy memories associated with that song.

i love skynnrd but 'free bird' has to be
the (second) most overplayed overblown
tune in history... much prefer 'simple man',
'tuesday's gone', 'call me the breeze',
'needle and the spoon', et al...

(and do you really prefer 'smoke on the water'
to 'highway star'?)

how bout david bowie ('young americans' and (esp.)
'sufragette city')?

Picasso's paintings generally look chaotic and horrible to me. Hi all

Not sure how we made the conversion from music to powerful arts but I thought I would mention my favourite song.

The Eagle and the Hawk, by John Denver and Mike Taylor

I am the Eagle, I live in high country,
In rocky cathedrals that reach to the sky,
I am the Hawk and there is blood on my feathers,
But time is still turning and soon will be gone,
And all of those who see me, and all who believe in me,
Share in the freedom I feel when I fly.

Come dance with the west wind and touch on the mountain tops,
Sail o'er the canyons and up to the stars
Reach for the heavens and hope for the future,
And all that we can be, and not what we are.

Rob

Some folks are born made to wave the flag,
Ooh, they're red, white and blue;
And when the band plays "Hail To The Chief"
Ooh, they're pointing the cannon at you! Nyau!
It ain't me, it ain't me;
I ain't no senator's son, no.
It ain't me, it ain't me;
I ain't no fortunate born.

Some folks are born, silver spoon in hand,
Lord, don't they help themselves, nyau!
And when the tax man comes to the door,
Ooh, the house looks like a rummage sale! Nyau!
It ain't me, it ain't me;
I ain't no millionaire's son, no.
It ain't me, it ain't me;
I ain't no fortunate born.

Some folks inherit star-spangled eyes,
Ooh, they send you out to war,
And when you ask them how much can you give,
Ooh, they only answer "More, more, more!" Nyau!
It ain't me, it ain't me;
I ain't no military son, no.
It ain't me, it ain't me;
I ain't no fortunate born.

- Fortunate Son

Right now, the Prince of Darkness - the wildman of Rock, Ozzy Osbourne's song "Paranoid" from his days with Black Sabbath and guitarist Tony Iommi is my favourite. Ozzy performed a fast tempo variant of "Paranoid" at the Queens Jubilee Concert and judging by the reactions of the crowd, he took them completely by storm.

Hi all

"On the run" with it's cool sound effects from Pink Floyd's brilliant "Dark Side of the Moon" does it for me, and I also like "Time".

Rob

P.S If you want Dark Side of the Moon get the original version, NOT the re-released version that was put out for the 30th Anniversary. The re-released version is missing that authenticity and is too jazzed up.
