Sting...snore!

I think Sting might make the dullest, most soporific music of any popular artist today.

(hunkering down for flames...)

No flames here. All I can think of is that Saturday Night Live that Sting
hosted. and the guys doing Sting apocrypha on the elevator. That skit crqcked me up.

I am somewhat of a Sting fan. I like the Police songs, particularly "Don't Stand So Close To Me", "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic", and the best known Police song: "Every Breath You Take"

Solo, I like "Do The Russians Love Their Children?" Of the trio who sang "All For Love", Sting is not only the best of the three, but also the only good singer of the three IMO.

"Gabriel's Message" was also the best song on the album "A Very Special Christmas", rivalled only by "Christmas In Hollis" by Run-DMC

top ten beatles tunes:
1) hey jude

No. 1? Are you NUTS?!? Half that song is "Naa, naa na NA-na-NA-naa, NA-na-NA-naa, Hey Jude!" Insipid!

2) the long and winding road

Never heard it.

3) helter skelter

Nor this; all I know about it is that it's the Charles Manson theme song.

4) strawberry fields forever

Cool chorus; don't know the rest.

5) golden slumbers-carry that weight-the end

YUK! That's part of the 2/3's of Abbey Road that's unlistenable!

6) get back

Yeah, that's cool; esp. the live version with Billy Preston.

7) here comes the sun

One of the better Abbey Road songs (it must be! It's actually good!)

8) while my guitar gently weeps

Never heard it.

9) i'm so tired

Well, your humour sure is, Nick!

10)happiness is a warm gun

Another Manson favourite I haven't heard.

10)something

The song is MUCH better than the title (Abbey Road again! There were about 6 good songs on Abbey Road, most of the rest was crap like "Oh Darling" and "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window")

10)back in the ussr

Damn, I wish I'd bought the White Album!

10)let it be

Not a big fan of this one.

10)with a little help from my friends

Preferred the Joe Cocker version (although I'm not really a Joe Cocker fan...)

10)rocky racoon

...what?

10)norwegian wood (this bird has flown)

This one should be MUCH closer to the top! First sitar recorded in Beatles music.

10)penny lane

Does this branch into Abbey Road?

10)when i'm sixty-four

Nick, from how you act, I would think that 64's an object in your rear-view mirror.

10)eleanor rigby

And maybe Nick's one of the lonely people (where the hell does he come from? Or come off, for that matter?)

10)you've got to hide your love away

Never heard it; title sounds like crap.

10)yesterday (okay, it's been played a jillion times... i still like it, can't help it)

O.K.

(actually, considering many of my other top ten lists, this one showed remarkable restraint, don't you think?)
(and... needless to say... most of these tunes were composed by an irishman)...

Funny, I thought John Lennon was an Liverpudlian! When did Liverpool cross the Irish Sea?

OBTW, I posted this as a response to Nick's obsessive hatred of Sting. He is trying to fill the Beatles' topic because he feels it should have more than Sting's

After all, Sting is far better that some of those who pass for legends, like Elvis Presley and Michael Bolton. (I actually used both names in the same sentence without vomiting! A first!)

At least when I don't know, I say I don't know instead of assuming that I do know.

I still pop in from time to time.

Erm, Jamaica is not as taken with Beatlemania as Europe or the U.S. is. More likely to hear bastardized dancehall ripoffs of Beatles songs than the rarer originals.

A list of good Sting/Police songs:

Every Breath You Take
Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic
Gabriel's Message
Do The Russians Love Their Children Too?
Don't Stand So Close To Me
Still My Beating Heart
Englishman In New York
1/3 of All For Love

of which nick a'hannay said:

(that's really cool, sam, but i was referring to listenable songs...)

Nick's condemnation of such great songs as "Gabriel's Message" and "Do The Russians Love Their Children too?" reminded me so much of this quote that I had to go back to my books to find it, for it is my mental image of Nick:

A Philistine with six fingers on every hand and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number: a Philistine the shaft of whose spear is like a weaver's beam. - Matthew Arnold, on William Cobbett, probably quoting the Bible's description of Goliath.

One day your jibes and jests will meet your David, and the simple truth will bring you down despite your heavy armor of studied ignorance.

Then again, when someone says Sting can't sing and Dylan can, you have to, kinda, wonder.

Nick, if tin supplies are ever badly depleted, you could make a fortune by selling your ears!

I loudly protest against all the Sting-trashing going on here!!!! For heaven's sake, the man can sing higher than Jimmy Sommerville! That's got to count for something! And he has lovely arms. The hair I'm not always so fond of, but come on! If you want to trash someone, go for Bon Jovi - he stinks!

(I wonder what ever happened to these good friends, Nick and Sam. Wer, how come there's so much more FORMER springizens than current population?)

Anyway, there's good things going for Sting and lotsa good things against him.

Pro
(1) Police - A great band with good tunes. RIP.
(2) Nice cello works. Comes from having good-looking arms.
(3) A good taste in music - other people's music, that is (e.g. Kurt Weill).
(4) Good arrangements.
(5) Great views on life, people and the environment.

Contra
(1) Solo-career has mostly uninteresting songs (his tributes are much more interesting).
(2) His views on life, people, etc. clash with his own life's reality ("Nobody should have more than one kid, there's too many poeple already." vs. "Yeah, I got, like, two dozen of them; you know, my wife likes to get 'em" - which she DID actually admit to in an interview...)
(3) His acting - while not as bad as some full-time actors' screen appearances, it's still lots worse compared to some other musicians creative side-shows.
(4) He delivers statements in public that are so conceited and ignorant, he either must be like that, or have a PR-company consulting him on how to get lots of publicity cheaply, not matter what quality.
