Topic 34 of 100: Who did you tell about the Spring lateley?

Wed, Jul 8, 1998 (10:29) | Paul Terry Walhus (terry)
Who did you tell about the Spring lately? And what was their response?

If everyone here tells some more folks about our conversation, we might
start growing. We have a lot to offer, it's just the word isn't getting
out much.
65 responses total.

i would suggest that the best approach would be to tell folks who you
interact with on-line, such as IRC, other chat rooms, AOL, MUDs, etc.

the reason i say this is simple: most "normal" people in the real world,
no matter how cyber-savvy they are, think it is just plain weird to
spend time online conferencing with other people, especially when you
cant even "chat with them" in real time.

Spreading the word among your cyber friends means that the message will
be heard by someone who already enjoys some form of communication online
and who might enjoy it here.

just my $0.02!!!

And a damned good idea it is!
It reminds me of the Blues Brothers where they go
on a 'mission from God'.

somewhere on the Spring today, I think it was in the Internet and Austin

He logged in yesterday, but didn't surface here. Maybe he just looked
around with his periscope.

The awesome Brian Zisk will be coming to Austin about the middle of next
month to party down with us. Check out Sanfranziskgo! We visited with
Brian in his Haight district flat on my last visit to SF. He was a most
cordial host.

Mike, since you're from Manchester, will you invite Meg Pickard?

Here's a quote from her:
"greetings and salutations to all who pass this way....I am:

a) fledgling anthropologist with extensive fieldwork
experience in the bolivian andes, researching issues of
ritual embodiement and identity.

b) really indecisive, it seems, as I am now involved in
postgrad research on (surprise, surprise) Internet
communities - both ON and OFFlinec)

c) eager to follow up any recommendations or contacts
anybody might like to pass this way...:)

d) The resident computer boffin (their word, not mine) in a
wholefood-art-community-cyber-cafe near Manchester, UK
- this may explain my interest in not just communities
ON the interent, but also those which are cultural
products or even constructions of the Internet - and
intereseting revere of roles, I think.

e) quite willing to talk at length about my interests,
research, life, etc etc but...f)
airly unwilling to go into all that without a proper introduction.

So please consider this my extremely convuluted (and
probably mis-spelled) way of saying hello. Hello."

Do I sense that Art is close to surfacing?

An email I just got:
> It would be very cool if you started a topic on race, class and the
internet
> in the internet conference! I'm sure it would spark an interesting
> discussion.

Yes, I'll do that, but I need to get used to the system first. I'm still
not comfortable with the navigation or commands, because even though it's
similar to the WELL, it's just different enough to get on my nerves. %-)

I was going to say that, "Evidently invitations work, Terry. Thanks
for the invite." I'm a middle aged guy that's just been wandering
around most of my life and I just wandered in here after Terry sent
me email.

Well Perhaps that's not exactly true. I've done customer support for
some local ISPs and I'd like to come to terms with that concept of
local. I am keenly interested in what has value to people.
Unfortunately, time is always a problem for me, just like everyone
else in this pre/inter millenium haze. (I could also use a good
spell checker)

Terry, Thanks _again_ for the invitation. I've forwarded your note to my
_home_ email account that JeffK set up for me as chad@sanmarcosTX.com. In
the mean time I stopped in and the signed up at Spring.Net.

If you would, please use the sanmarcosTX.com address for me in the future.

I'll work at getting by spring.net and I'll mention the site to a few
friends.

Rereading that it sounds pretty non-commital but I'm at the end of a very
long day and the next one starts in just a few hours. I don't want to
close this note by letting fatague mask my appreciation of the amount of
work you have obviously done on that site.

No problem at all. Take a deep breath. Relax. Enjoy.

That is also my address. I have a house in the country. And I'll call my
roomie out there Mahalene (the lady from Pareee) and make sure she holds
it!

Hi peoples! I just wandered in off the street and wanted to say 'hey'.

I told an old friend who lives there in Austin about Spring. She's looking for an ISP that she can afford (that doesn't take over her computer like AOL did) and I recalled the very friendly rates. I'm in the process of sending her the info from the sign-up page via snail mail.

I didn't see any info on dial-up access... I assume there is some?? can somebody email it to me at: gratcliff@mediaone.net

I'll include it in my snail mail to my friend.

We don't have sign up anymore, so I'd tell her to get ev1.net for $10 a month, it's the best deal around these parts. Everyone's Internet, they have a toll free number also.

Net Zero also has 9.95 a month accounts. They're nationwide.
