My wifey's are
Carmello's
Little Italy
Olive Garden
Bodega della Pasta

It's hard for me to say because I work at one
and eat at not that many more.

I guess you could call them up and ask?!?
I don't do the recipe thing, if I try it at a restaurant I try to discern the
ingredients, usually I have to try it at least twice, then I go home and experiment!

Exactly. Drives my wife nuts when I make something
she likes, then asks me if I wrote down the recipe
and I tell her, "Nope."

ALPAS testing going on today, so no student contact today. I should be getting caught up on some paperwork but obviously, I have chosen to slack. Excuses include: rough morning, need some food, pretty days make me unproductive... the list goes on.
Where do your kids go to school? I did my student teaching at Doss Elementary on Far West Blvd.
Still chilly in Austin? Enjoy the park, I am envious.

Had a fabulous Italian dinner on Friday night with an old friend.
Josephina's in LoDo. The bread was served with a tomato-garlic pesto that I culdn't get enough of until the portabello mushroom came in its reduction sauce! For dinner I had grilled eggplant with polenta. So much I couldn't finish it all. And for all those who haven't gotten to watch me nosh my body weight at dinner (like Paul), not finishing a delicious meal is darn near unfathomable for me! After dinner we went to Enoteca for another bottle of Merlot and after an hour I was ready for the bruschetta with
roasted red peppers and chevre!
A truly enjoyable dinner and OOPS! I forgot to mention the tiramisu at Josephina's. Eh, it wasn't THAT good.
I'm holding out for Little Italy!

Don't let it control your life, WER.
You don't have to fight it either.
Just realize it's not strong, and it's your creation.
You can just lay it to rest (or kill it, if that makes you feel better!)

Hi all. Good to meet km the other night. Another great dinner (as usual). Talk about tough working environment for the km; it must have been at least 110 F.
Coming home from that, setting the AC at 90 would feel cool!

Debate for dinner place that night was Gators or LI; no question in my mind.
I ordered the spaghetti w/ spicey Italian sausage. Used to be on the menu a few years ago, but still get it anyway. What do you think is the *best* thing on the menu?

Was at Mezzaluna's the other night for the first time, Lamb rack was good, almost as good as the stuff I had in New Zealand in February. Actually had Tiramisu for the first time ever there. I'm usually too full to order desert...

In fact, the weather has been BEAUTIFUL here. 80s in the day and back down to 50s in the evening. I love being able to bring a sweater everywhere I go but not having to wear a coat!
And the mornings are always so new and fresh smelling...

No eat-in restaurants lately... lot of delivery and take out.

Italian. Back on topic. wer, that brione was fabulous the other night. Thanks again for the pass! Can you pass along the recipe for the sauce or is it a trade secret? And the same with the coffee . . . what is your favorite brand/flavor?

Yep, shrimp brione. Very tasty! We kept hoping you would make an appearance but the reports were that you were very backed up in the kitchen. One of the waiters may have known Kristen, he sent her a desert! That tiramisu you made was so rich I had to order the coffee to finish it, the coffee revived my appetite for it by counterbalancing the sweetness.

I found this cool critique of Riale's, the Sicilian pizza place.

Austin American-Statesman

Reale Good Food
by Linda Anthony
October 17, 1996

Behind the strip-center facade are white tablecloths, an extensive menu and affordable, satisfying meals

It's been a long time since I've seen people milling outside a restaurant's front door waiting for an open table, especially one housed in a strip shopping center. So when our carload drove up to Reale's Pizza & Café in Ross Plaza on U.S. 183 last week, it took me awhile to register what these folks sitting on benches or standing by the door where doing.

It seems that waiting for a table at Reale's is the norm, not the rarity, at least according to those having to do so. And that probably has more to do with the warm welcome and predictability of the cuisine that it does with the paucity of the pickings in that neck of the woods.

Reale's is a family-fun restaurant, and regulars are greeted like long-lost friends. The maitre d' is likely to ask if they'll be having "the usual" this evening. Newcomers, however, are not given short shrift in the greetings department, and we were quickly and pleasantly seated.

Perhaps it's the name, but I didn't expect white tablecloths or as extensive a menu as I found at Reale's. There's a lengthy list of pasta choices, along with steak, seafood, chicken and veal dishes. Pizza, which figures prominently in the restaurant's name, has its own section, but the choices are pick-your-own toppings and white or Sicilian pies. Prices are moderate, with pasta entrees (all dinners include a salad and garlic bread) ranging from $6.95 to $8.95, while other entrees cost between $9.95 and $14.95.

As we scanned the menu, we were struck by the enormous, and I don't use the adjective lightly, Sicilian pizza that folks at the adjacent table were enjoying. Since there were five of us (including two children) that night, it seemed like sharing a pizza might be a better appetizer option than stuffed or sautéed mushrooms, calamari, mussels, fried mozzarella, antipasta or zucchini parmigiana ($2.75 to $6.95). What we didn't know, at least until we ordered, was that toppings for the Sicilian pizza had to be ordered individually, and at $1.60 each (toppings are priced according to the size of the pizza ordered), it would prove to be a costly proposition. So we opted for a medium Ala Reale Pizza (pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, Canadian bacon, black olives and bell peppers at $15.30) instead and were delighted with our choice. The toppings were heaped generously atop a thin, crisp crust, and the kitchen didn't skimp on the cheese.

For the record, Reale's serves some of the freshest dinner salads in town. NO wedge of iceberg lettuce with watery tomatoes or wilted cukes are served here. Instead, you get a verdant mound of mixed greens, including some radicchio, slivers of bell pepper, olives, crispy, garlicky croutons, luscious tomatoes, carrot curls and peperoncini. The dressings, all made on the premises, are good versions of their genre, but unless you like a lot of it, ask for it served on the side.

We must have all been in the mood for carbohydrates, because everyone at our table opted for pasta of some sort. One of the kids got the child-sized portion of spaghetti, which at $3.95 is a pretty good deal, especially when you also get bread and salad. Throw on a meatball, which Carly didn't want, and the price rises to $4.95. The older child ordered Fettuccine Alfredo ($8.95) and was nice enough to share her entree with those wanting a taste. At least a couple of us wanted more than that, and wished we had ordered her silky smooth, richly subtle entree. At all too many places, this classic is ruined by a heavy hand. Not here. Tortellini Ala Carbonara ($8.95) has a similar yet even richer sauce, thanks to the addition of eggs and bits of smoky bacon. It's a good choice for those who like heavy pastas, but if you're looking for something that won't sit in your stomach after a few bites, pick something else.

The Eggplant Siciliano is one such possibility. It's basically eggplant parmigiana with chunks of boneless chicken added to the layering process. Reale's version is as toothsome as any I've had in town, and since it comes with a side order of spaghetti in red sauce, it's an entree that enables you to get a lot of Italian basics in one dish. Another choice which accomplishes the same thing is the Italian Sausage and Pepper Platter ($8.95) which features that can't-go-wrong combination over a heaping mound of fettuccine in red sauce.

Portions are plentiful, and none of us could finish our entrees, which for once meant no dessert. It could be that the pizza was more filling than we thought, but it was the hands-down table favorite that night, and something that all of us would order again. But that could be said of just about everything we ate, which is a mark of a good restaurant and one of the reasons there's always a wait at Reale's.
