For the first time ever, the Spring is asking it's users to help out.
You don't have to, but do it if you can.

It costs $1299.00 a quarter to host the Spring servers on a T-1. Jeff
Kramers charges us $250 a month for system admin work, and there is a
$100 a month software fee from Armidale Software for our conferencing
software.

So what's that all come to? Well, if you toss in about $250 a month for
misc expenses, which is probably very convservative, it's about $2600 a
quarter or $1033 per month. The only income we get comes from website
developement and our only website currently paying is childrenstory/tvpc
which pays about $600 - $1000 per quarter, some of which goes to a web
authoress.

So, if you can, sen dyour contibution to:

The Spring
Rt 2 Box 56r
Cedar Creek, TX 78612

You can do it anonymous or opening. Contributors will be sent some kind
of memonto like a Spring mug, a hat, or something to express our
gratitude. I'll link this into drool also.

Our T-1 fee is due 7/31/98, so that's why I'm starting this now. No
contribution will be too small or insignificant.

Terry, I shall be glad to contribute (tax deductible?...you are non-profit).

However, I have no objection to adverts. Geocities pays a lot of the websites' real estate. If you polled the members, I doubt many would object;.
and that would relieve the fund- raising.

we should qualify. And I'm open to adverts.

No problem, and thanks! I have an idea on the domain name suggestions.
If you make a suggestion, I'll co-register it in your name as the owner
and if we sell it, the Spring will split the returns 50/50 with the
person who is the name co-owner.

 Response 24 of 236: Riette Walton (riette) * Tue, Aug 18, 1998 (03:46) * 2 lines

Not acceptable - that's not fair. What would be fair is if you told us all how to register, and we share our returns 50/50 with the Spring. And the names that are registered by the Spring should only earn money for the Spring. If we register names, splitting it 50/50 would still earn us money that we would not have had otherwise, plus it would earn the Spring extra money on top of the money it earns from registering its own names. Taking money from the Spring is unfair, as the Spring is working at a l
ss, and is unemployed(!!) - unlike those who log in every day. If us users can't however register extra names ourselves, then coming up with them is the least we can do - the Spring should not have to split money with US to induce us to help. Because then we're a greedy bunch of parasites who should not be here, but pimping off people within our reach.

the spring needs your contributions to continue functioning.

I'm at a critical point with this system as we approach our 10th
anniversary. I have to work full time and manage rental houses and find
myself without time to manage this system and lacking in funds to continue
to subsidize it. I have to figure out a way to make this float on it's
own between now and March, which is when I'll have to decide to continue
or not.

basically, it costs $400 per month for our bandwidth, it costs $150 per
month for system admin work (jeffk), an unknown amount (but not
insignificant) for hardware/software costs, $100 per month for Yapp
licensing. Our only income is from contributions and a few websites
(tvpc.com, childrenstory.com, lifespaces.com, and eatsolar.com) which
bring in around $250 a month.

to continue, we need:
1. administrative help with billing and sales
2. more websites to host
3. electronic commerce and database connectivity
4. hardware upgrades

Property taxes are due and my rentals are down right now. There haven't
been any contributions lately. And our population seems to be leveling
off, not growing and expanding, even though our number of visitors is a a
good level.

I hope we can turn thing around. I, for one, would like to see it
continue. But I can't go it alone much longer.

terry, i'll send you some $$$. also, i would like to suggest that we
consider abandoning Yapp for something cheaper. $100 a month? there
are so many alternatives out there that are a lot cheaper than that,
i think. what about jef poskanzer's acme news? another suggestion
would be to move all of the spring servers to the Linux OS. it is
cheaper to run and you would likely find a lot more folks who would
be willing to help maintain it for free, and you would not lose the
rock solid stability that comes with a Unix environment.

just some suggestions!

 Response 47 of 236: Paul Terry Walhus (terry) * Tue, Dec 1, 1998 (08:27) * 22 lines

Good suggestions. As far as os goes, we already have our operating system
sin place and paid for, these aren't really costing us much. We just
installed FreeBSD on access.spring.net and it's very minimal in cost.

The Yapp license is paid for basically (it was about $1,000) and the $100
a month is if we go over a certain number of logins. It might be more
costly to switch over to a new sosftware system, as yapp, despite a few
warts, works pretty well for what we do.

What we need, and what may be evolving at my houses in Austin and Cedar
Creek is a little geek crew that can sell and produce websites and
commerce sites. Tami has agreed to take over running the Spring, as far
as doing billing and some sysadmin work, so this will help. I work about
12 hours a day average at my gig. Jeff is pretty loose about his fee, and
he gets it far less than monthly, he's pretty lenient and is aware that
we're not all that well heeled. Same with Kaylene, she's let it ride for
now.

Maybe we need to develope some more specialized websites of our own and
have ads and commerce enabled on them. There's also potential for being
an isp out in the Bastrop area. It's a matter or prioritizing and
organizing all these options.

Terry, I've recently heard about a new web ad rep firm that charges a hefty commission (50%) but allows you to do ad contracts on a month-to-month basis, which would be a safe way to test the waters. It's called Burst Media (www.burstmedia.com, I think) and I've checked them out: a local IU basketball site here in Bloomington (peegs.com) uses them and says he always has an ad run that nets him at least a dollar a thousand page views, and occasionally double or triple that. So this guy must earn around $50
a month.

You will see per M ad rates much higher, but in looking around, the trouble seems to be with unsold inventory. Also the scary feeling that comes with long contracts. I could not make myself sign one with Flycast for Pemberley.com a year ago or so.

Might be worth looking into.

From what I've seen, Terry, the most successful conferencing systems are those that possess either of the following properties:

1. A ridiculously large amount of money
2. Are specialised.

Obviously (1.) is out for us, short of me winning the lottery and since I don't play the lottery that's not going to happen any time soon. So, (2.) it is, then. What do we specialise in? you might ask. Well, cast your mind back and realise that we've done it ralready a couple of times: bronte and drool drew in so many people they nearly crashed the place out! It would seem that the time has come to bite the bullet and start putting advertising in. Banner ads relevant to particular conferences could b
inserted, I guess, and our regulars encouraged to click them once every couple of days - heck they might even buy something. The combination of two or three "dynamite" conferences, with scores of people in, and them all gaily clicking their mouse buttons on the banner ads is not going to hurt the old finances, is it?

Maybe shell accounts should be charged for, since they side-step the banner ads? It doesn't have to be that much a month/quarter/year (*please!*) but it would bring in some revenue.

I see on the Spring web site there's a page detailing the price of various different connection packages (dialup, ISDN, etc.). HOw about polishing this up and really pushing it around your local area? Give people a great deal - much cheaper than they might expect to get off another ISP, and they'll come in in droves. It doesn't matter if your profit margins are small if the number of people is high enough.

Become an Amazon Bookstore Associate vendor. Each conference, or even several topics within a conference could have affiliate links, and you would make something like 10 or 15% off of each sale.

Offer cut-price server space - lower than anybody else in your area. Find out the shortest length of time it's possible to get a dedicated web server package (you know, space, connectivity, etc.) in your area, and then chop that in half - if there's one thing that scares people, it's committing to something for too long. Sell domain names like www.(yourname).spring.net to people who don't want to sign up for a two-year InterNIC thing.

Stop registering random domain names in the hope that they'll one day become valuable - I've got to say I think it's unlikely that you'll net another $20k by selling silk.com! Each domain costs money, and it's money that could perhaps be better directed...

Finally (for now!) ADVERTISE! And I don't mean advertising in the conferences of other communities - those people have already chosen where they want to be, and are unlikely to do more than come over and have a quick look. Advertising in the "old" media is often more useful - the "cool and edgy" article should have been a major breakthrough on people coming through. Perhaps you could get a follow-up article? One thing that could draw completely new people in is pushing a whole internet/Spring connecti
ity package - monthly dialup/ISDN internet connection and full Spring access (waive any Shell account fees) all in one shebang - heck, you could even design a modem package for those people (and there are a lot of them!) who don't have modems! License some third-party computers and sell those, throwing in free on-line support here are the Spring.

Seems to me there are lots of things we can do, if only we pull our fingers out!

Thanks so much to the four folks who have sent a combined total of nearly
$200.00. Our goal is $400 a quarter. Soon, we'll be putting up an
appreciation page thanking all those who have contributed (unless, of
course, they specify that they want to remain anonymous). These folks
have done so much to help us along.

Another way you can help is to sign up for your own "briefcase"; the
Spring has just beomce an affiliate with Visto and they offer a wonderful
web based application that let's you keep track of your calendar, files,
photos. email, address book, tasks, bookmarks, events, family, friends and
co-workers. It will be a great help to you and your group.

And every time someone signs up, the Spring will get $2.00. So this is a
way you can help yourself and help the community. Please sign up and make
your contribution that way!

You can click on this banner to get started.

Or you can send a contribution to:

The Spring
9011 Quail Creek Dr
Austin, TX 78758

Soon, we may be taking credit cards for contributions as well!

For now, checks payable to the Spring. Or just send us $2 bucks by
signing up with Visto. It's a good thing.

Thanks! Basically, it costs $1200 a quarter for our T-1 that we run the
Spring on, it isn't our only expense, but it's the critical one. It's
actually a pretty good deal, it's just a lot to bite off for one person.

I tried to fix the link to visto on http://tvnight.org. If we get a
lot of $2 clickthroughs that will help, but it will take 50 of those to
match the $100 contribution we got last week. But every bit helps, and if
we can get enough of these you never know!

I'll let you know how many of these $2 hits we get, I know of at least one
(wolf) already. If anyone else clicks through, please post something so I
know if folks are doing this.

Today we struck out on our Visto link. Although we had over 500 folks view the
link, zero clicked through!

So our click through percentage is now in the 2% range.

And I had three rentors move out of my Cedar Creek house today leaving 3 vacancies
(huge loss not coming at a good time) so I had to cancel my trip to Tennessee this
weekend to a Fourth of July Fest and I put an ad in the Austin paper for room mates.
Gotta really hustle now to get folks out there.

But on the good side, I found a place that will process credit cards for donations,
with no upfront fee and a 9.5% processing fee. , please call me about this and
I'll give you to development url. And I'll email it to you.

I'm going to go by a few of the Churches out in Cedar Creek and see about finding
some folks who might be interested in the place. It's a great place and it's wired
to the net and all.

The Spring made over $100 this weekend on Visto clickthroughs, and we
havne't even introduced the idea of Visto groups yet. When folks hear
about this they'll want to use Visto for their families and groups. It's
really a good thing so I feel good about using these banners to support
us. I'll keep building the affiliates page for folks who want to shop
there and use these click throughs and, wer, feel free to copy appropraite
banners to strategic areas around the Spring (eg. barnesand noble.com to
books). But Visto is really turning out to be a winner for us.

I hope this trend continues, if it does, it could mean the end to

Terry, I posted this notice in Drool, Food, SpringArk, and Porch and Screwed
then sent it through Springfolks message board. Could you give me some figures to throw at them for the next round of pleading?! This place and its people are very special to me!

If you value Spring and the discussions herein (not to mention the
venting going on), do you realize this is Terry's web site for which he pays all the bills? Please, it is time to help with any
donation you can afford. He has some pretty big bills to pay and he needs your (and my) help to sustain all of the stuff we
are posting. Think if he had to cut back and eliminate some of - or all of - the conferences?! Please!

Figures:

1288 quarterly colocation fee charged by ddc.net
602 quarterly SW Bell bandwidth fee
125 purchase of 9 gb hard drive to ease disk space shortage
??? upgrading of machines for y2k (1800-2000 approx)
300 Yapp licensing fee for the quarter

So that's about $4k to get us through till the end of the year.

I sent this to the list, but I put lots of nice and loud notices about it on the Austen.com site.

I think it might help that I can be specific for people about what exactly is needed. I posted the info (without what looked like credit card numbers), so people know what is owed.

I suppose some of that was due to our chat room. Since that is gone, I hope the expenses drop off some.

It should, and if you need a chat room, I can work on a plan for that on another server. But for some reason, austen.com is using huge amounts of bandwidth. This isn't a bad thing, it's good, it means the site is healthy and a lot of information is getting transferred. I just need some help from the community with these extra bandwidth costs.

We're working on finding an off-site chat room, right now it looks like we may settle in at ATT's chatroom service. Chat rooms use a lot of bandwith, so my guess is that the death of our room should cut back on your costs.

If you had it on another server, you'd have to pay for that, right? I think keeping it at a free site would be good (if I can find one everyone on my site can get into, which isn't easy). That way someone else picks up the tab :)

Do you want me to post B&N ads on Austen.com, and encourage people to buy their books there?

Well, today I ordered 1.5 gib bandwith DSL at my Quail Creek house, and I could put one of the old UNIX servers back online from the days when we colocated. I think this would do the job, and we would have total control over the setup. In fact, I could dedicate an entire machine to this.

Speaking of bandwidth on austen.com:

Pretty amazing! What's it gonna cost you to put the old UNIX server back online? What is the new 1.5 gb bandwidth gonna cost? Something is terribly wrong if you are supporting something in which you do not even participate. What happened to the good old American way?! (Sorry, but I am getting testy about this on your behalf)

It's gonna cost $299 per month for 13 machines with dedicated ip addresses, I think I'll set it up as ns1.wholetech.com and ns2.wholetech.com. I'll get 3 or 4 of the roomies there to chip in $30 apiece a month for their own ip addresses and that will cut it down to around $200 or less.

But it will let us run an Internet buiness out of that house. I've got 2900 square feet of space in Cedar Creek I'd like to use for the same purpose, running servers, but the problem is no DSL, only isdn in the area. So the Quail house is going to be it for now. Maybe we could run satellite bandwidth to Cedar Creek?

First, I'm very happy to run fundraisers on Austen.com to support our part of the Spring, and I know a lot of my people are happy to donate--but I need to know when the money is needed, and I'd like to know how much is needed on a monthly basis to support Austen? It seems that the only time I hear about money problems is when there is a crisis. If I don't know it's needed or how much is needed, it's hard to know to run a fund-raiser.

If I can get info to my people on the costs of the site, I think they will understand the kind of money is required in donations and ante up. (Unfortunately I have quite a large group of teenagers, who just don't have money to donate, but the adults are fully willing, and I think they can do enough.) I'm also willing to look at the Austen site to see where bandwidth can be reduced, but don't really know how that whole things works, and could use some general explanations of it.

Second, I'd like clear info on affiliates which could be used by the Austen folks to help raise money. What affiliates are all out there, should I put up B&N links, for example? How much could be collected this way?

Thirdly, if you do set up those new computers, how much would that cost? Would switching over some of the biggest bandwidth-hogging parts of the Austen site to those machines save money? or would it mearly shift the same cost somewhere else?

Info is good! More info!
Money is good! More money!

Good questions, Ann. I'll have to get with the DSL folks to find out if they charge for excessive bandwidth. I'm curious about this. If they don't charge for bandwidth, then I'd say that would be the way to go for the bandwidth intensive aspects of austen.com.

The best place to get info on affiliates is reporting.net, you can see the range there. Visto is potentially far and away the best affiliate, and they offer a great service.

I'll have to figure out why it is that austen.com uses so much bandwidth. It's not necessarily good to reduce it if it means large transfers of useful information are going on. I'll look at the logs in more depth to see which areas of the site are getting the most intense traffic. Maybe that will reveal the answer.

It's surprising that austen.com has so dramatically surged ahead of spring.net in bandwidth, with all the streaming video and audio we do on spring.net. But somehow it's happened. And in many ways it's due to the great job of site building y'all have done, Ann. It's a sign of success and growth.

Topic 41 of 100 [porch]: Spring Pledge Drive
 Response 173 of 236: (sprin5) * Sun, Apr 23, 2000 (02:51) * 3 lines

I'll try and get a good answer to the when the money is needed question. Perhaps we should do a fund raiser at the start of every quarter. January, April, July and October would be good times. Start at the first of each of these months and try to raise enough to cover bandwidth and any ohter costs. Just a suggestions, you could establish a membership/patron system like I'm working on for spring.net (see the button on the main page).

Where do you see austen.com going, Ann? And what would you like to see in the future as far as new features on the site? How do you see austen.com fitting in to the universe of other austen.com sites, do you see it as the portal site? Or do you see it more as a place for literary expression?

Topic 41 of 100 [porch]: Spring Pledge Drive
 Response 174 of 236: Ann (Ann) * Sun, Apr 23, 2000 (20:45) * 5 lines

If the volume of traffic from Austen.com end up being overbearing on Spring, there are ways I can reduce it without ruining the site. Most of the traffic is on the bulliten boards, but I can move those off-site to a free service, such as Inside The Web. I'd like to avoid that if possible, because they have ugly flashing ads at the top, and I'd have less control over the structure of the pages. But I looked at the Analog output and the number of hits the different boards get is over 55% of the Austen.com traffic. So, if necessary, Austen.com could go on a diet.

I noticed the usage spike, and was quite surprised by it, especially when it seems to correspond to the death of our chat room (which occured around 3/13/00). I would have thought that would have caused a drop off.

As for Austen.com. I don't know where I want it to go. Right now it is a bifurcated site. The front half has lots of JA links, and I'm slowly putting her six novels up as well. The back, and interactive, half us mostly dedicated to creative writing and archiving the stories people post (over 650 of them!) I'd like to have more Austen-related info, but there is no reason to duplicate the stuff that Pemberley has, and that covers a lot of ground. Right now my goal is to get annotated version of the novels up on line. I'm working on the third of these right now.

I'd rather figure out ways to support the site rather than inhibit it's growth in any way. I'm looking foward to these annotated novels, that's outstanding. It wouldn't seem like the bbs would use that much bandwidth.

Pretty soon, in 30 days to be exact, I'll have some homegrown servers that can take up some of the slack. And also there may be other deals out there on bandwidth. Excessive bandwidth is a good thing, it means we're going, we just have to be more creative about supporting it with ads, donations, and click throughts and get more commerce sites in gear.

Which raises the question...can we actually get it registered in our name instead of yours? I know I mentioned buying the domain from you before. I was wondering what you might want for it?

Have you checked out the click-thru links to make donations?

First, it says on the screen that terry@spring.net does NOT accept payments from non-US payers. What?! Why are you not taking advantage of the International capabilities of PayPal? This is what is needed, especially for austen.com, which has a huge worldwide following?

Didn't you sign up for a "business" account?

Second, why does the screen have an "amount" shown ($25) and a quantity? Why isn't it donate what you want and what you can? This is nonsensical to most people.

Please check out your links and setup from the main Spring page, as well as the one Ann has posted at austen.com

Good advice Karen, I'll follow up on all of this. I did sign up for the business account, and I'll try and figure out the International stuff (any hints?).

Bandwidth for austen.com was enormous this month. I just got the monthly report. It was about $583 something, but there are about 14 pending PayPal signups wiating verification and I got 4 $25 donations in the last few days. I've been sending out color 8x10 photos to donors and am looking at more items to send out in appreciation.

I'll check out those links!

About 12 people have signed up for PayPal via our link but haven't validated yet. If you want to validate (and get the $5.00 deposited in your account) you need to check your bank statement online or by phone and find out the two amounts that PayPal deposited in your account.

Once you find these two amounts, you need to log in to your PayPal account and enter these amounts in the appropriate boxes.

*PayPal Users* have to use a special url to sign up!

People from 26 countries around the world can now send and receive money
online using PayPal. PayPal is already the #1 online payments service in
the US -- over 4 million users have signed up since we launched our service
one year ago. And now users from all over the globe will be able to take
advantage of the world's fastest, easiest, and safest way to move money.

It's simple to sign up
[https://secure.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_international-register] for
an international PayPal account. Just complete a brief registration form,
confirm your email address, and add a credit or debit card to fund your
payments. Registration is completely free, and all transactions are
conducted in US dollars. PayPal is faster than mailing a cashier's check,
and much cheaper than sending an expensive money wire.

Also, all PayPal users in the US have automatically had their accounts
upgraded to be 100% compatible with international members.

Residents in the following countries are now eligible for PayPal accounts:

Australia * Austria * Belgium * Brazil * Canada * Denmark * France *
Germany * Hong Kong * Ireland * Israel * Italy * Japan * Mexico
Netherlands * New Zealand * Norway * Portugal * Singapore * South Africa *
South Korea * Spain * Sweden * Switzerland * United Kingdom

Dear Mr. Walhus,

It doesn't matter what you post here, as people who want to contribute do not necessarily read this topic. When you click on a DONATE button on Spring's main page, you get this screen that says "Spring does not accept payments from non-U.S. users."

Here is the screen from the click through.

https://secure.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr

Have you asked PayPal why it says this? That would deter people.

I have this question in to PayPal, it's in response to the email from Jennifer at PayPal Customer service. I think I may know the answer but it involves modifying the code in the link that PayPal generates. If I get time, I may experiment with this today.

There may be a clue here:

http://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=p/hlp/help_global_intl-outside

There are a lot of PayPal pending accounts that folks will need to verify
if the Spring is to receive the $5.00 sign up bonus, as well as the person
signing up. The key is to look at your bank statement and see the two
amounts PayPal deposits in your account, then go to their verification
screen and key these amounts in.

I'm working on covering the bandwidth bill for austen.com primarily and
charges connected with running a network connection to the sites.

PayPal may be a bit complicated for some, I can see why. But it's worth
the effort to figure out in that it may provide a secure intermediary to
make Internet Payments.

If you haven't received a card from me by Christmas, please let me know.
There are some folks whose addresses I don't have who I would like to send
cards and/or photos to. My apologies to those who may not get cards, I'm
working on putting together a complete list of those who make up our
austen, firth, and spring communities. Email me with your address or
others addresses that you may know of please. mailto://terry@spring.net

Has the international PayPal donation question been answered? I am about to do an Austen.com fundraiser and I noticed that the PayPal buttons on the Spring.net front page still contain the code "no_intl", which suggests that this still is up in the air.

But when you click through to PayPal, part of the message says:

International account holders: In order to complete this purchase, you must first complete activation of your account. Please complete registration and activation of your account at www.paypal.com before paying this merchant.

That is a bit of a confusing item. Does "registration and activation" mean just filling out the credit card and password info that appears on that page? Or does it mean something else? I found the International Registration page. Is the one that pulls up when you click through the PayPal button the same thing--or is that just for US folks? Do my overseas folks have to find their way to the Intl Registration page?

Terry, I still am in limbo with Austen.com.

I'd love to go ahead and move the site over--since it is very confusing for my people to be stranded between two sites and 2 IP addresses, never knowing which site "Austen.com" will land them in--but I still can't set up my CGI boards. Right now only 2 of my directories are processing the CGI, the rest treat a script like plain text and print it out on the screen. I'm heading into my 3rd week of confusion over on Austen, and I'd like to get it all worked out. (And this afternoon the 208.171.121.122 digihost site is either really slow or not responding at all when I try to pull up pages.)

BTW, why is it that some days "Austen.com" sends me to the new site, then on others it sends me to the old? It seems pretty random and swings back and forth. It makes it really hard on me and my e-mail too, because I can only access my Ann@Austen.com e-mail when it is routing to digihost; it gets blocked when it routes to datapipe. That is my primary e-mail and I can't help wondering how many messages are going astray. Yesterday I could get my e-mail, the day before I couldn't, and I can't today either. I go days without getting it, then get it for a day, then lose it again.

Also, I sent you over $400 in checks today from my people. I think that brings the Austen fundraising total--not counting credit card payments--to about $625.

Terry, it's too confusing where it is. My people are going nuts. I have posts diappearing. I have people be routed randomly to the new or to the old site--and since the two sites do not have identical content at the moment, that means it appears as if things are disappearing and reappearing. I need to get this settled down.

Ann, as you heard from Barry, the following directories have the .htaccess file in them:
/
/babble
/board
/derby
/novel
/people
/writers
/boardarc
/giberish

This allows the use of .cgi files and should clear up your board problem.

You can inspect the contents of these files and examine the permissions settings if you need .htaccess in any other directories.

Starting today, we're going to have four quarterly fund raising
drives to
pay our isp bills, make improvements, do backups and expand and add
new
features (faster server with bigger hard drives, etc). The pledge
drives
will be held on

October 1-15, 2001
January 1-15, 2002
April 1-15, 2002
July 1-15, 2002

The goal of the current pledge drive is to pay all or a good portion
of
the $900 per quarter hosting fees we pay, plus another $600 to
initiate a
schedule of full backups to our server and an emergency preparedness
plan.

This quarter 25% of all donations will go to the newly established
college
fund for children of the survivors of the World Trade Center attack.

Send your checks to:

weighing so heavily on myself and a few others.
